What kinds of transfers can I do in online banking?
Under the Transfers button on the left-hand side of the page, you can choose from Quick, Classic, and Scheduled transfers.
- Quick: Make a transfer in only 4 clicks! Use this screen to make a one-time transfer within your STCU account, to any linked STCU accounts, or to or from other financial institutions after connecting an external account using the Connect External Account feature.
- Classic: You can transfer funds from your member number, to another STCU member number, or to a connected external account. This includes the ability to link other STCU member numbers to your login for future transfers. In this screen you can also schedule future-dated transfers and set up recurring transfers.
- Scheduled: From this screen you can manage any future-dated and/or recurring transfers. The Scheduled page will NOT show you any recurring transfers that we may have set up for you. If you need help managing recurring transfers that were not set up within online banking system, please visit an STCU branch or contact us to connect with an STCU representative.
Can I transfer funds between STCU and an account at another financial institution?
Yes! Accounts you own at another financial institution are often referred to as "external accounts". You can link external accounts via STCU's online banking system so you can transfer funds back and forth between STCU and your external account. Since you can also transfer from a linked external account, STCU discourages the linking of external accounts that you do not own or on which you are not a signer. Only savings or checking accounts at other financial institutions may be linked (any of kinds of loans or lines of credit may not be linked).
How do I perform an external transfer and how long does it take to complete?
Once you have completed the first step of linking your external account, you may then transfer funds between STCU and your external account.
To do so, go to the Transfers page, and click on the Classic transfer tab. The Classic transfer tool is the preferred place to create your external transfers because it will display a Transfer Confirmation box which will indicate the date on which the transfer will occur as well as the estimated delivery date(see below).
In the example above, the transfer would occur on 7/14/2014, with an estimated delivery date of 7/16/2014. The cut-off time for the processing of external transfers is 1:00 p.m. (Pacific) each business day. External transfers crediting an STCU account could potentially have an additional 2 business day hold placed on the funds, beyond the delivery date. In total, please allow 3-4 business days for external transfers to be completed.
How do I link my external account with STCU's online banking?
An external account is another account that you own at a different financial institution. You can link external accounts via STCU's online banking system so you can transfer funds back and forth between STCU and your external account. Since you can also transfer from a linked external account, STCU discourages the linking of external accounts that you do not own or on which you are not a signer. Only savings or checking accounts at other financial institutions may be linked (any of kinds of loans or lines of credit may not be linked).
There is a 2 step process to verify ownership and link to an account at another financial institution. External accounts may be added through the full Online Banking site or through our STCU Mobile Banking app.
Step 1A: Provide your external account information to STCU (full Online Banking site):
There are 2 ways to provide your external account information to STCU through the full Online Banking site;
- From the Transfers page, go to the Classic tab, select Add Account, then choose at another bank. OR
- From the Settings page, go to the Accounts tab, and select Connect External Account.
Both of these methods will take you to the Add Account at another bank form (like the one below) where you can provide STCU with the routing and account number of the external account start this process.
Note: If you are uncertain what routing and account number to use, please contact the other financial institution and ask them "What routing and account number should I use to facilitate an ACH transaction (like a direct deposit)?"
Step 1B: Provide your external account information to STCU (STCU Mobile Banking app):
There is 1 way to provide your external account information to STCU through the STCU Mobile Banking app;
- Open the Menu within the mobile app and choose the Transfers link.
- Choose the Add Account link in the top right hand corner.
- Choose the External Account option.
- This will now display the adding External Account fields.
- You can now provide STCU with the Account Type, Routing Number, and Account Number.
Once you have provided STCU with the routing and account number, STCU will begin the process of sending 2 small micro-deposits (both under $1) to that bank account. It could take up to 3 business days for these deposits to arrive in your external account. Shortly thereafter, we'll retrieve these deposits with a single debit so that there will be no effect to your external account's net balance. Once you have received the two micro-deposits, you can proceed to step 2.
Step 2A: Confirm your micro-deposit amounts (full Online Banking site):
To confirm your micro-deposit amounts, sign back into STCU's online banking system and select Settings in the upper right corner. Then select the Accounts tab. You should see your external account listed towards the bottom, under the External Accounts section. Click the Confirm button, and enter the amounts of the micro-deposits you received.
Step 2A: Confirm your micro-deposit amounts (STCU Mobile Banking app):
- Open the Menu within the mobile app and choose Settings link.
- Choose the Accounts setting.
- Choose the Confirm button listed next to your pending external account.
- Enter in the micro deposit amounts within the First Deposit and Second Deposit fields.
- Press Confirm to finish establishing the external account.
Once you have successfully confirmed the account, the account status will change from a Pending status to being a Confirmed status, and you can begin making transfers to and from the external account.
Is overdraft protection available for online banking transactions?
No. Online banking transactions do not have overdraft protection.
Why not? Because when you make a funds transfer, an online banking transaction will fail if there is not sufficient funds in your account at the time of your transfer. The transaction will not be retried; rather, you must manually reschedule it.
To determine whether your online banking transaction has failed, click the "Online Activity" link, which will display all your online banking transactions and statuses. A failed transaction will have a status that reads "host failed."
Set up automatic transfer for important recurring transfers such as loan payments. We encourage you to contact STCU to help set up an automatic transfer. This will help reduce your chances of incurring a late payment. Unlike online banking transfers, automatic transfers set up for you by an STCU representative will check for available funds once a day for 7 days, beginning with your original transfer date. If after 7 days there still are not sufficient funds, the automatic transfer will then fail.
