At a back-to-school event Friday for West Bonner County School District staff, STCU announced it is granting $100 to each of the district’s 72 teachers, to help cover the costs of classroom supplies.

The grants totaling $7,200 are a response to financial challenges and unresolved budget issues that may have forced West Bonner teachers to dip into their personal funds to cover some costs of outfitting classrooms.

Each teacher can spend their $100 grant on anything that will enhance students’ classroom experience, whether it’s a basic need or something special.

“After months of uncertainty, we wanted to give these teachers the opportunity to purchase vital classroom supplies,” said West Bonner parent Danielle Wilson, STCU Community Branch Manager in nearby Newport, Wash. “Time is of the essence, with students scheduled to show up for the first day of school on Tuesday.”

Classroom supply grants are a longtime tradition at STCU, and one of many ways the not-for-profit credit union honors its commitment to education. Each year, the credit union provides the grants to teachers from throughout North Idaho, Eastern Washington, and the Tri-Cities, selected in random drawings.

Those grant drawings are ongoing, and unaffected by the additional grants provided to West Bonner teachers.
