David Guttenfelder, photojournalist.

7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019.
First Interstate Center for the Arts, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

David Guttenfelder made history in 2011 when he helped the Associated Press open a bureau in North Korea — the first-ever Western news agency in the politically isolated country. For the first time in North Korean history, images of daily life were shared with the world, while Guttenfelder himself acted as an unofficial ambassador.Photographer David Guttenfelder captures spectators along Fidel Castro's funeral procession in Cuba.

In 2016, he boarded the first cruise ship in decades to travel from the United States to Cuba, where he extensively covered Fidel Castro's four-day funeral procession. Guttenfelder's talent and willingness to cross long-closed borders from the United States has led to some of National Geographic's most revealing geopolitical photo essays.

Join Guttenfelder in Spokane for a rare and revealing look at North Korea and Cuba.

Before you go.

National Geographic Live is not a movie; it's a speaker series.

Here are a few other things you should know before attending the next event:

  • It's family-friendly! All ages are welcomed and encouraged.
  • Speakers will present their photographs, videos, and experiences for about 90 minutes, with no intermission.
  • Doors open one hour prior to each performance. All guests must pass through security metal detectors and bag searches. We recommend use of small purses or clutches.
  • STCU members can also purchase season tickets. See footnote below.

Dynamic events. Fascinating people. Captivating stories. Join us at National Geographic Live.
