On January 3, 2011, for only the third time in our 77-year history, STCU welcomed a new president/CEO. A long line of staff and directors cheered Tom Johnson as he entered our Liberty Lake headquarters for the first workday in his new position.
"Welcomed" is not exactly the right word. Tom Johnson has been associated with the credit union since 1994, when he joined our Board of Directors. He became part of the management team, as vice president of administration, in 2006.
So, Johnson was involved in every major decision for 17 years before becoming president and CEO of the largest credit union in the Inland Northwest. STCU serves 162,000 members in Eastern Washington and North Idaho, and has more than $2.5 billion in total assets.
Johnson succeeded Steve Dahlstrom, who spent 30 years at STCU, including 20 as president and CEO, before retiring on December 31, 2010. Dahlstrom succeeded Clare Chapman, who was the second president of the credit union that Ernie McElvain founded in 1934 with other Spokane schoolteachers.
